The Herbal Dispensary: spray-free & organic fresh produce - in the Xmas box!

Raglan

An avid gardener since childhood, horticulture was an obvious choice of study for Herbal Dispensary owner Bronwyn Lowe. Whilst growing plants to sell at local markets she developed an interest in them for medicinal purposes. This led to further studies in herbal medicine and a desire to raise awareness of the benefits to the wider community.

Bronwyn opened up shop in 1996, a small dispensary in an old doctor’s office which has since moved around the corner into larger premises and grown into the one-stop-shop for healthy living and lifestyle choices.

Along with her husband Geoff, they head up a team of naturopathy and herbalism practitioners and provide herbal medicine, supplements, health food and of course organic fresh produce, fruit, vegetables and more. All the ingredients for a healthy lifestyle!

Raglan Coconut Yoghurt - in the Xmas box!

Raglan Coconut Yoghurt - in the Xmas box!

Raglan

NZ Food “Gourmet” Award winning, hand-made dairy-free yogurt

It was just a year ago when Mr Coconut (Seb) decided it was time to go dairy-free due to allergies, so Mrs Coconut (Tesh) started experimenting in her kitchen with making coconut yoghurt. It took time to get it right and lots of testing but before long Raglan locals started asking if they could have some too. And so the journey began.

Unable to keep up with the demand and a desire to develop the business lead the couple to seek out a commercial kitchen and retail suppliers. Recognition for their efforts came in the form of the NZ Herald Bite Gourmet Award at the 2015 New Zealand Food Awards.

Taunga Kereru - organic fruit, veg & preserves

Taunga Kereru - organic fruit, veg & preserves

Raglan

Organic growers Liz and Rick started farming their land 23 years ago, with their garlic crop’s first harvest 4 years later. The crop was so successful they ended up with a surplus which they began to share and supply to caterers around town.

One such happy customer was using a lot of basil in her Raglan café and got Liz and Rick to get planting, which they did. A change in that café’s direction left the growers with a glut of basil and so began their now infamous pesto!

Over the years Liz and Rick have diversified and now have a large variety of fresh produce and conserved delights, nothing is wasted. They can be found at the Raglan Creative market the second Sunday of the month.

Prinz Mushrooms

Prinz Mushrooms

Raglan

Mushroom grower Lennart Prinz’s fascination with permaculture began with a book he picked up during a study break in Germany. He realised that there was a real opportunity to combine his love of mushrooms with a method of growing that is in harmony with the ecosystem.

While there were many varieties of mushrooms available to consumers in Europe, back home in New Zealand choices were limited, Lenny decided to change that and began researching for his mushroom farm project.

Today Prinz Mushrooms grow gourmet mushrooms with a strong focus on organics and sustainability, they pick almost daily ensuring freshness and dry any not sold, which make a great pantry staple for those fresh mushroom-free summer months!

Naked Dairy

Naked Dairy

Waitetuna

Mike, Madeline and Dan run The Naked Dairy, a small farm nestled in the Waitetuna Valley hills between Hamilton and Raglan.

Their pasture-based system follows organic principles and a philosophy of; healthy soil, pasture, stock and product. Soils are enhanced naturally using only manure, compost, lime and trace minerals and a low stock number treads lightly on the environment wile maximising animal health and welfare.

They began selling their raw milk to a few neighbours at the gate about 10 years ago and today supply a much larger number of customers eager to drink their milk as it comes, non-pasteurised and non-homogenised. About 5 years ago they decided that their hard-working cows deserved a decent retirement and started putting them out to pasture instead of getting rid of them once their milking days were done. These cows now provide nutritious meat.

Madeline and Mike introduced the sheep and lamb more recently and all of their beef, lamb, sausages and bacon are preservative and additive free.

Raglan Buds Flower Farm - fresh cut flowers

Raglan Buds Flower Farm - fresh cut flowers

Raglan

Raglan Buds Flower Farm is a new venture for Kristel and Jenny, two friends on a mission to become sustainable, cut flower farmers and florists. Last year the pair went from being good friends to good neighbours, their families now sharing 3 acres of idyllic, sloping land they have named The Valley.

Over numerous coffees, dinners, kid swaps and gardening sessions they brain stormed ideas for ventures they could do together while still allowing them to be home for their 6 children. With their shared love of gardening and permaculture, they knew it had to be something that involved getting their hands dirty.

Their mission is to sustainably grow, harvest, design and offer fresh cut flowers.
